David Gosset, founder of the China Europe Forum and initiator of the China Europe Europe Global Initiative, published an article on the China Daily website on June 13, calling on Europe and the United States to face the reasons for the rapid development of electric vehicles in China, rather than using tariffs and trade conflicts to narrow the gap with China. The content of the article is as follows:

While writing the book "Inspiration: The Greater Bay Area," I happened to come across news about the EU imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. Starting from next month, the European Union will impose temporary tariffs of up to 38.1% on electric vehicles imported from China, which may trigger trade conflicts with China.

This news prompted me to delve deeper into BYD, a company closely monitored by the European Commission. When examining BYD, it is hoped that people will realize that tariffs mask the real problems facing the European Union and prompt more fundamental questions to be raised to explore the future development trajectory of Chinese enterprises and their role in the global market.

BYD Auto was founded in January 2003, and its founder Wang Chuanfu was born in 1966. There are many articles about Wang Chuanfu's legendary experience, and this entrepreneur born into a poor family in Anhui Province has now become one of the most outstanding business leaders in the world.

A sentence by American investor Charlie Munger (1924-2023) is particularly intriguing about Wang Chuanfu. Munger said that Wang Chuanfu is a combination of Thomas Edison and Jack Welch. In 2008, following Munger's suggestion, Warren Buffett invested $232 million in this relatively unknown Chinese company at the time.

In the United States and the European Union, BYD often finds itself portrayed as a threat. This sustained attention highlights the important position of the company. If the influence of a company is negligible, it is impossible to continuously attract attention. Western politicians often attribute BYD's success to unfair practices, claiming that government subsidies have given it an advantage, surpassing car manufacturers in the United States and the European Union. However, such arguments overlook key factors.

The success of companies like BYD mainly stems from favorable ecosystems, such as stable leadership, diligent professional ethics, and perhaps most importantly, true innovation ability. BYD has over 90000 R&D engineers, has applied for over 48000 patents globally, and has obtained over 30000 patents.

In the long run, Western politicians imposing tariffs on Chinese cars will not solve the problem. Although they may appear to be protective measures and countries naturally hope to defend their own interests, they only cover up their weaknesses and fail to cultivate participants who can win global competition. In other words, imposing tariffs is a shortcut that does not require too much innovation or strategic thinking.

It is worth noting that the European Union and the United States have sufficient time and resources to anticipate the transition to electric vehicles. Europe does not have a competitor to BYD, which raises important questions about EU strategic planning. In the field of electric vehicles, as well as in the fields of cyberspace and artificial intelligence, the world operates in the form of G2 represented by BYD and Tesla in China and the United States, respectively. The EU faces challenges in this regard and should not attribute its shortcomings to external factors. It should focus on internal reforms, strategic thinking, and decisive action.

China's actions on the global stage are worthy of recognition. The most basic question is whether companies like BYD can go beyond internationalization and truly establish their position as global entities. Although there are many obstacles ahead, both internally and externally, the globalization of Chinese enterprises will be beneficial for China and even the world. Especially in the crucial field of sustainable transportation, this progress brings great hope for the future well-being of humanity.

The time has come for Chinese companies to become global leaders. Although they will create their own unique path, they can draw valuable lessons from the experiences of American and Japanese companies in history. A global company that wants to create its own characteristics requires its executives to have a global mindset, and its products and brands have universal appeal across all continents.

It is crucial for the world, especially the Western world, to accept this trend in principle. Although this trend will bring about more intense competition, it will also drive progress.
